The following illustrations were created by James Poynor utilizing the 3D CAD program SolidWorks™. Mr. Poynor worked from the original BuOrd blueprints to make a drawing for each of the individual components of the guns. These were then combined to make the illustrations shown below. These illustrations are quite large and can be zoomed in to show very small details such as the breech face engravings and ID plate lettering.

Mr. Poynor is working on additional items and this page will be updated as those are completed.

These illustrations show the gun as it was originally designed, but it was never finished in this configuration. Instead, in compliance with the Washington Naval Limitation Treaty of 1922, the gun was completed as an extra-long 16"/56 weapon.

Intended for the never-completed USS South Dakota (BB-49) battleships and the USS Lexington (CC-1) battlecruisers, these guns instead were given to the US Army who utilized them in heavy coastal artillery batteries during World War II.

This section shows the differences between three USN 16" (40.6 cm) guns.

This section illustrates the 16in "Type" Gun, the predecessor to all USN 16in guns. The proving ground girder, the slide, and the elevating mechanism still exist at Dahlgren but the gun and yoke were unfortunately scrapped in the 1950's.
